Get Recipes for Android

We're shipping a direct download while Google Play verifies the developer account. Five steps, two minutes. The app updates itself after that.

How to install

  1. 1
    Tap Download APK

Chrome starts downloading the file. It's about 140 MB.

  2. 2
    Confirm the Chrome warning

Chrome shows "This type of file can harm your device." That's the standard warning for any app installed outside the Play Store. Tap Download anyway.

  3. 3
    Open the file

When the download finishes, tap Open from the bottom bar — or pull down the notification shade and tap the recipes-beta.apk notification.

  4. 4
Allow Chrome to install apps (one time)

Android asks: "Allow Chrome to install unknown apps?" Tap Settings, toggle the permission on, then tap the back arrow. You only do this once.

  5. 5
    Tap Install

Recipes installs in a few seconds. The orange bookmark icon appears in your launcher.

Good to know

Why the Chrome warning?

Anything installed outside the Play Store triggers this prompt — it's not specific to Recipes. The app is signed with our own certificate. We'll move to the Play Store once Google finishes verifying our developer account.

How do updates work?

The app pulls the latest JavaScript on cold start, so most updates arrive automatically. When we ship a new native build you'll see a notice in the app and we'll send a fresh download link.

What about the Play Store version later?

When the Play Store listing goes live, install it from there and uninstall this beta first. Same data, but the Play version auto-updates and gets us off the unknown-sources flow.
